In sensory screening, you only check the outside of a person’s eye.
Signs of eye health problems
Signs that a child has an eye health problem include:
- Crust or pus on the eyelids and/or eyelashes
- Watery or sticky discharge from the eye/s
- Abnormal red colour on the white part of the eye
- The coloured part of the eye/s looks unclear or ‘milk coloured’
- The eye/s do not look in the same direction as each other.

Read through the list of common visible signs of an eye health problem and look at the corresponding images.

Eyes not looking in the same direction as each other (one eye, or both eyes turn inwards or outwards)
Warning
Identifying eye health problems early is important. If untreated, eye health problems can cause permanent damage to the eyes. This can cause vision loss.
