The second step involves fitting the assistive product.
Once the assistive product has been selected, the service provider makes sure the assistive product is:
- Properly assembled
- Adjusted to the right size
- Comfortable and safe for the person to use
Getting direct feedback from the person is very important during this step.
Depending on the assistive product, fitting may include making further adjustments and/or modifications to make sure the product matches the person’s needs.
In this illustration you can see a service provider working with Michael to check that his white cane is the correct length. The cane should be long enough for Michael to scan the ground in front of him as he walks.
Correct fit is very important. If a product does not fit well, it may not work as well, it could be uncomfortable and/or cause harm.
Remember Mathias?
Mathias uses a rollator to walk around his house and garden. When he received his rollator, the service provider made sure it was set at the right height for Mathias. They helped Mathias to practise walking with the rollator, and asked if he felt comfortable. They also checked the brakes to make sure they were in good condition, and that the rollator was safe.
